James Whitfield
Founder and lead consultant. Twelve years at Deloitte before starting Growth Orbit. Specialises in revenue strategy for professional services and distribution businesses.
Growth Orbit Consulting started in 2016 when our founder, James Whitfield, left a Big Four advisory role after twelve years. He had grown frustrated with a model that produced thick slide decks but left clients to figure out implementation on their own. The first engagement was a six-week cost audit for a Manchester-based food wholesaler. That project cut procurement spend by 14 per cent and led to three referrals in the same quarter.
By 2018 we had a team of four and a permanent office on Buckingham Road. We chose Manchester deliberately. The city has one of the densest concentrations of mid-market companies outside London, and most of them were underserved by the big consultancies, whose minimum fees priced them out.
Today we are a team of nine consultants, two analysts and a small operations group. We still take on only eight to ten active engagements at a time because we believe in depth over breadth. Every project gets a named lead consultant and a dedicated analyst, and both are on site at least two days a week for the duration of the engagement.
Our mission is straightforward: help owner-managed and mid-market businesses in the UK make better decisions about growth, cost and structure. We measure our success by client outcomes, not by hours billed.
We base every recommendation on your actual data: purchase orders, payroll records, CRM exports, shift rosters. If we cannot measure it, we do not recommend it. This means our clients can hold us accountable to specific numbers rather than vague promises.
Our consultants spend two or more days a week physically present in your offices, warehouses or branches. We talk to the people who do the work, not just the people who manage it. Problems look different from the shop floor than they do in a boardroom.
We tell you what we find, even when the finding is uncomfortable. If the data says a product line should be shut down, or that a senior hire is in the wrong role, we say so clearly. Clients hire us for candour, not reassurance.
After the two-week diagnostic, we quote a fixed fee for the full engagement. No hourly billing surprises, no scope-creep invoices. If we underestimate the work, that is our problem, not yours.

A short history of the firm so far.
James Whitfield completes the first engagement: a cost audit for a Manchester food wholesaler that cuts procurement spend by 14 per cent. Growth Orbit Consulting is formally registered.
Team grows to four. We move into permanent offices at 46 Buckingham Road. Revenue strategy becomes the second practice area alongside cost reduction.
During the pandemic we help seven clients restructure operations for remote and hybrid working. Two of those engagements lead to permanent organisational redesigns that remain in place today.
We add organisational restructuring as a formal practice area and hire Amir Patel to lead it. Total completed engagements pass 60.
Team reaches eleven. We begin working with clients outside Greater Manchester, taking on projects in Leeds, Birmingham and Bristol while keeping our Manchester base.
